In WW2-era Ukraine, 11-year-old Hugo, on the brink of adolescence, is taken in by his mother’s friend, Mariana, a sex worker at a brothel frequented mostly by German soldiers. Suspicious of one another at first, the two develop a strong and intimate bond.

Based on a novel by the late Israeli author, Aharon Appelfeld - winner of the Independent Foreign Fiction Prize, in 2012 - Mariana’s Room is a multilayered and powerful coming-of-age drama that elegantly and provocatively explores the liminal spaces between life and death, good and evil, and the different forms of love.

This screening will begin at the advertised time with no ads or trailers.
