Who am I? Who are we? Where do we live? How can we all live well together? Do you like Spaghetti and Makeup?

These are vital questions for children and young people in the UK who are negotiating an increasingly complex society. A key driver of stereotyping, misunderstanding, fear and prejudice is lack of contact with people different to ourselves. *

This exhibition showcases artwork made over the past year, by children from thirteen primary and secondary schools across Manchester. The children were brought together by HOME artists to creatively explore identity and friendship as part of the national schools linking programme, The Linking Network.

Through a series of workshops celebrating difference, the children reflected on who they are as individuals, what makes them unique, and how their personal qualities can have a positive impact on those around them. Through activities, drama games, music, and artmaking the students tested new ways of expressing themselves to form new connections and to see how they can relate to peers from different parts of Manchester. The primary school age children examined friendship, questioned what it means to be a good friend and considered the importance of looking out for one another. In secondary schools, children explored belonging and community. Students also reflected on what groups they may be part of and what it means to be an ally to others.

One child at Chorlton High said: “This was actually really fun...I was really nervous about it all at first, but I actually am looking forward to doing this again.” Another child from Button Lane said: “I’ve made a really good friend.”

Chloe Malandra, Artist Facilitator at HOME says: “A highlight for me watching students form friendships with peers they might never have expected to connect with. It has been truly inspiring.”

This project was delivered by Artist Facilitators Chloe Malandra and Ellie Harney and HOME’s Creative Engagement team.

The Manchester Schools Linking Programme is led by HOME with the support of Manchester City Council since 2023 and is funded as part of the Local Schools Linking Programme by The Linking Network.
