Shane, a Jersey boy with big dreams, crosses the river in hopes of finding a more exciting life at iconic nightclub Studio 54. When Steve Rubell, the mastermind behind the infamous disco, plucks Shane from the sea of faces clamouring to get inside, Shane not only gets his foot in the door, but lands a coveted job behind the bar – and a front-row seat at the most legendary party on the planet.
On its first release in 1998, 54’s story of sex, drugs, disco, and a bisexual anti-hero was deemed too risqué for mainstream cinema audiences. The film was recut, reshot and something of its essential essence was lost in the process.
It would take more than 15 years until 54 (Director’s Cut) would hit the big screen, finally telling the story of Studio 54 the way filmmaker Mark Christopher and his team had always intended.
