Anti-cool: Pop up exhibition: Antiquarian Shore Artist-Film Installation

Fri 4 Jul
Fri 4 Jul

Anti-Cool presents a brand-new piece of work for one day only in the HOME Arches. The project, Antiquarian Shore, explores how craftsmen have traditionally adapted to the environmental characteristics of the coastal landscape, especially the notoriously dangerous North Sea.

The work contains footage of seascapes documented at several shipwreck sites that occurred in the 19th century along the East Yorkshire Coast. The project brings together an ephemeral installation tracing the ghost of boat made from over a thousand copper nails. The design was made with reference to one of the oldest available technical drawings of a coble boat, Peggy (1890), from the archives of the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich.

Whilst working collaboratively with the community of former fishermen and boatbuilders in Bridlington on the restoration of a coble, the artist has learnt the characteristics of such a traditional craft. Subsequently she has worked closely with the architect Charlie MacKeith on a design to bring such a coble back to life.

Special thanks to the members of Bridlington Sailing Coble Preservation Society, Bridlington Harbour Heritage Museum, Scarborough Maritime Heritage Centre and Royal Museums Greenwich.

This project is produced with the support of Arts Council England.

About Anti-cool
Anti-cool is a Japanese artist who creates primarily through collaborative activity. Using audio visual storytelling, performance and installation, her aim is to explore the histories intrinsic to the landscapes of today, tell the stories of marginalised people and borders that separate. The unique cultural heritages of her collaborators are often central themes of the work. Past solo exhibitions/screenings include Tea and Sugarcane at FACT (Liverpool, 2024), UNESCO International Day for Monuments and Sites at Aveiro City Museum (Portugal, 2022), LUNA at CCA Annex (Online, 2021), and On Returning at Toynbee Studios, Artsadmin (London, 2019).
