The Muppets rub shoulders with the artistes of The Royal Ballet; PAW Patrol set out to save Christmas while the Grinch sets out to steal it; and It’s a Wonderful Life reclaims its place at the heart of HOME’s Christmas celebrations.
Beyond the usual festive fare, December’s film programme includes a season of not-so-merry melodrama. Christmas is, after all, the season for heightened emotions, excess and – of course – romance.
The star at the top of the melodramatic tree is surely Douglas Sirk: Hollywood’s maestro of eye-catching satires and heart-rending dramas throughout the 1940s and 1950s. His wintertime classic All That Heaven Allows is a suitably seasonal centrepiece of December’s line-up, and screens alongside a selection box of great melodrama.
