It’s almost a decade since the Press Complaints Commission issued guidance to address what it agreed was widespread inaccurate reporting on the issue of Asylum. Yet still, the media fuels constant negativity and a one-sided view of the subject.
In January 2013, Red Bobble Theatre Company set out to explore the issue of asylum and immigration. They spent four months attending community groups, drop-in centres and charity events.
On their journey they were given the privilege of interviewing incredible individuals from across the globe who are now living in the UK. They have used these interviews to create a unique piece of verbatim theatre which challenges the myths and untruths perpetuated by the media about what it really means to seek asylum, and explores the amazing strength and resilience of the human spirit. What they found were universal stories of hope, courage, community and love. This play is what they heard, from interviews word for word. To Walk In Your Shoes presents the side without a voice.
