Do you remember your first bike? the first tentative adventures as you found your balance, and took to the road outside mum and dads or in the park?
Do you remember the first time you had a fall? or have you been teaching your own children to ride and it brought back those childhood memories?
Come and spend 15 mins remembering with Michael in this live performance of Cyclical?
‘Thanks for joining me. We haven’t got long. We only have 5 kilometres together. That’s 15 minutes. I’ve been doing this for some time. An hour. A day. A week. It doesn’t really matter anymore. We’ve all lost track of time, haven’t we? We’re just going around in circles.’
Cyclical sees theatre-maker, Michael Pinchbeck, cycle on an exercise bike in his home for 6 hours, the time it would take to get from Nottingham (where he spent lockdown) and Manchester (where he works). He will cycle the equivalent distance of 85 km and audience members will be invited to join him for 15 minutes at a time to accompany him on his journey and share stories of bikes and bike rides and the cyclical nature of working from home.
He is cycling to work. He is cycling from his home to HOME. He is busy going nowhere.
On 14 August join Michael via zoom for a 15 min one to one performance.
On the day, you will also be able to follow this feat of endurance throughout the 6 hours on a second camera so you can track his progress here.
How does it work?
Simply book a slot and then you will be sent a zoom link. Join Michael at the allocated time for a private 15 min one to one conversation.
You might like to cycle along with him on your exercise bike, or simply chat to him from your sofa while he cycles, but please bring along a drink.
Please note, there will be one link for the entire 6 hours, so you will be told when your 15 mins are up and the next person will be let into the room, at which point you will end your conversation.
About Michael Pinchbeck
Michael Pinchbeck is a writer, director and theatre-maker with over 20 years of experience. He has made live work for theatres and galleries, parked cars and park benches. He co-founded Metro-Boulot-Dodo Theatre Company in 1997 after studying Theatre and Creative Writing at Lancaster University. In 2004, he began a five-year live art project – The Long and Winding Road (2004-09) – shown at the ICA (London), Ikon Gallery (Birmingham) and The Bluecoat (Liverpool) and has continued to make one-to-one performances such as Sit with me for a moment and remember (2018), featured in The Sunday Times and The Guardian’s Best of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe lists. He was commissioned by Nottingham Playhouse to write two new plays: The White Album (2006) and The Ashes (2011) and wrote and directed Bolero (2014) that premiered at Nottingham Playhouse before touring the Balkans. His work has been selected for the British Council’s Edinburgh Showcase.
Tickets are available as ‘Pay What You Can’ – the suggested price for this event is £5 but there are a range of ticket prices so you can choose what you can afford from the options, including £0, as we want as many people as possible to access our Homemakers commissions.
We’ve also included a higher option for anyone who wants to take the opportunity to make a larger donation to our artists and organisations. How much you choose to pay is completely up to you, and every audience member will receive exactly the same content and experience.
All the money raised from ticket sales for this event will be split evenly with 50% going directly to the artist and 50% to HOME’s response fund to allow HOME to continue to support future artists and commissions.
Homemakers Project Overview
Homemakers is a series of new commissions, where we invite our favourite artists and artistic partners to combine to create work at home, for an audience who are also at home.
We’re not pretending that all art can be experienced online just as satisfactorily as in person; but we want to demonstrate the innovation of artists who work all kinds of forms, by inviting them to respond to this very specific context. We want to bring contemporary new performance to audiences all over the world, in all its form-flexing, mind-expanding, surprising subversive brilliance.
