Unlimited Artist Commission Opportunity

Deadline for applications is 09:00am on Mon 17 September 2018.

Unlimited would like to contract three Manchester based, professional artists to contribute to the evaluation process for Future Bodies (our co-production with HOME made in collaboration with RashDash) and You Have Been Upgraded (the headline performance event for the 2018 Manchester Science Festival). This is part of our new approach to formal evaluation processes and our desire to keep artists at the heart of everything we do. Particularly in our work with scientists and researchers, we are keen to deepen our exploration into the unique perspective and valuable contribution artists can bring to scientific research.

We Will:

  • Give you as much access as possible to scripts/process/people involved in the process of making
  • Pay a fee of £750

You Will:

  • Attend one rehearsal in each of the 4 weeks of the rehearsal period starting 17 September
  • Attend at least one performance in the first week of the run at HOME w/c 1 October
  • Attend the “Meet the Scientists + Cyborgs” event on Saturday 6 October at HOME
  • Attend the “You Have Been Upgraded” event on evening of Thu 18 October as part of Manchester Science Festival
  • Have a cup of tea and a chat with as many of the creators of the show and the event as you are able

As a result of your engagement and in response to your experience you will produce a response to it. We would love to hear your ideas for what you would want to produce. We are open to submissions from writers, poets, film makers, animators, musicians, theatre makers. The only criteria is:

  • Whatever is produced should be able to be documented fully i.e. if the response is for live performance then it would also need to be filmed/recorded. As these pieces will be used as part of the evaluation of the projects, we need to be able to share/present them to our funders and stakeholders.
  • The commission must be complete and submitted by Mon 17 Dec 2018.

If you are interested then please send us:

  • A short biography of yourself and your work as an artist. Please don’t worry about making this very ‘formal’ – we’d just like to know a bit about who you are and the type of work you like to make.
  • A one page description of how you would approach this commission and what you would hope to produce – we know this will change and develop after the initial idea but please try as best as you can to communicate the idea clearly as we are not planning on an interview process where we will have the chance to ask you questions about it. If you would prefer to submit your idea as spoken (audio) of filmed application, then we’re very happy to listen/watch as well as read!
  • Confirmation that you are able to commit to all the events described above, including a rehearsal session in each of the weeks commencing 17 and 24 September. A session last 3 hours and we have morning, afternoon and evening sessions available for you to attend.

Deadline for applications is 09:00am on Mon 17 September 2018.

For all questions about the commission and to send your finished submissions please email Jon Spooner – j@unlimited.org.uk

Successful applicants will be notified before the end of day on Mon 17 September.

We look forward to receiving your applications.
