Mother’s Who Make: MOTHERLINES Commissions

Deadline: Mon 22 Sep

Get In Touch

With support from Arts Council England are offering seven commissions to mother artists working across visual art, live performance and cross-art based in Greater Manchester.

We are looking for artists (or collaborations) to create a new work responding to the provocation of: MOTHERLINES.

The word Motherline is designed to spark images and ideas for new work. It is deliberately expansive and might capture the imagination of some instantly and others over time. The work that you make can respond in any way to this provocation, here are some examples:

· It might provoke thoughts about the generations of women and mothers in a family.

· It might conjure images of a line of mothers supporting and holding each other up within your lives.

· The metaphor of the phone line that connects us and can be a lifeline to many.

· The lines go back in time and will continue with our children and so on.

· We stand as a point on a line.

· What does this provoke you to make in your art form?

· This doesn’t have to be a literal response but a creative one.

This work will then be shown in the HOME Arches on 13th December as part of Motherline Festival.

The event will be open to the public and will be a celebration of work created by artists and community members from the Mothers Who Make network and beyond.

What we are offering:

Various commissions responding to the provocation of MOTHERLINES.

· 3 x £600 Visual Art Commissions - this work must be suitable for simple installation in HOME Arches and could be prints, sculpture, painting, textiles etc.

· 3 x £600 commissions for Live Performance - this might be theatre, music, dance, circus to name a few. You will also receive up to 2 days rehearsal space. The performance will be up to 10-15 mins of new material to test with our audiences.

· 1 x £1200 cross-art form collaboration for two or more artists. This might be a new or existing collaboration between different mother artists and is a chance to be inspired by one another. You will also receive up to 2 days rehearsal space.

What we’re looking for:

· You must be based in Greater Manchester and have a Greater Manchester Postcode

· You must be a Mother artist

· The work must be ready to perform or exhibit work in the HOME Arches on 13th December. This is not a gallery space so your work must be able to be

mounted/displayed on a tabletop or on the floor (we can look into this with the successful applicants)

· As well as exhibiting your work we would like to artists to share their process of making the work in a way that suits them and allows others to glimpse into how they create work.

· You must be able to set up the work on the morning of the 13th December and take it down the same day.

Please note: Due to the space restrictions on this occasion, your work must be able to be displayed easily and fit with a non -gallery space. We cannot accommodate large scale installations.
