Did you miss 5 Soldiers when it was here in Manchester?
We are delighted to be partnering with Rosie Kay Dance Company to broadcast its award-winning 5-star show 5 Soldiers live from an Army drill hall in London. Following a sold out run at Edinburgh Festival Fringe, 5 Soldiers begins its UK tour with an offsite performance presented by Sadler’s Wells, before heading to Hull, Aldershot, Swindon, Colchester and Birmingham. Tune in for this special live stream event on Fri 8 September at 19.45, commissioned by The Space.
This gritty, honest and acutely well-observed dance work tells the stories of five young soldiers serving on the frontline, four men and one women, weaving a story of physical transformation that humanises soldiers and examines how the experiences of warfare affect those that choose to put their life on the line.
The show was developed after choreographer Rosie Kay experienced a career-threatening injury, which provoked an intense period of field research with The 4th Battalion The Rifles and a military rehabilitation centre to understand the effects of conflict and training on soldiers’ bodies. With her trademark of intense physicality and athleticism, this thrilling performance enables a glimpse into the training that prepares soldiers to risk their lives.
The show featured in the Top 10 Dance of 2015 in The Guardian and has received a Special Commendation from the Royal Society of Public Health in recognition of its excellent contribution to Arts and Health practice.
Marking a shift that sees the Army opening a dialogue with the public via the arts, the 2017 tour of 5 Soldiers is being presented in association with the Army, with performances taking audiences into military bases across the country.
