Zero Degrees of Separation

Directed by Elle Flanders

This is director Elle Flanders’ documentary set in Israel about two couples, one gay and one lesbian, who are intertwined but at the same time from completely different worlds. She focuses on Ezra, an Arab Jew who is extremely vocal about his opinions regarding the oppression in his country and Sefin, an Arab who is under house arrest. The fact that the two met at the border that divides Palestinian and Israeli is extremely poignant.

We also meet Edit, a Jewish Israeli and her Palestinian girlfriend, Samira. The couple are deeply committed to each other but differ in their hopes and aspirations for their country. Flanders’ narrative evokes feelings of not only compassion but empathy for the players in this film. If you didn’t know much about the crisis in the Middle East you will do after watching this.
