Y Tu mamá también

Directed by Alfonso Cuarón

Director Cuarón returned to his native land for this heady coming-of- age-tale cum road movie set in contemporary Mexico. Tenoch (Luna) and Julio (Bernal) are both 17 years old and have been best mates forever. Then one day they meet Luisa (Verdú), a beautiful 28-year-old Spaniard, whom they attempt to impress, and seduce, through an invitation to come away with them to an isolated, perfect beach – that exists only in their imagination. When later Luisa surprises them by accepting their invitation, the trio set off on a trip across Mexico that becomes a voyage of liberation and self-discovery. In a clever script that mixes comedy with drama, the director and his co-writer (and brother) bring a fresh realism to the conventional genres, both in terms of interwoven glimpses of contemporary Mexican society and in the film’s sexual frankness. But it’s the central trio that really makes the movie as Bernal proves that his sizzling performance in AMORES PERROS was no fluke.
