What Time is it There?

Taiwanese director Tsai’s latest film is a moving meditation on love, loss and communication that steers between pathos and dark comedy, Taipei and Paris. Street vendor Hsiao-Kang and his mother have just lost his father, and the absence pervades their small flat as Mum awaits the return of his departed spirit. Her son sells a dual-time watch to a young woman heading for a Parisian holiday and falls in love. Obsessed, he takes to setting every timepiece he can find to Paris time, while in the French capital, the young woman has a lonely, isolating holiday.
