Valentine’s Day/ Querelle

Directed by Rainer Werner Fassbinder

Fassbinder’s final film was shot only a few months before his death. The tale of an eponymous sailor (played by Brad Davis) who murders his drug-smuggling partner, the film has undergone critical re-evaluation in recent years. Revelling in characteristic Fassbinder themes of betrayal, power relations and love, the film can be seen as the last film of New German Cinema and also as a precursor to New Queer Cinema. A radical work that explores the nature of transgression, it’s also superbly realised in terms of its visual aesthetic, inspired by Douglas Sirk.
