UK Premiere/ ¡Vámonos, Bárbara!

Directed by Cecilia Bartolomé

Ana – a wife, mother and advertising executive in her forties, with a comfortable life in a bourgeois Catalan family – rips up the rules when she decides to inject a bit of truth into her existence and take back control of her life. To the horror of her family, Ana decides to leave her husband and head off on a road trip to the coast, taking her 12-year-old daughter Bárbara with her. Down by the sea, conventions melt away as Ana enjoys her newfound freedom.

Director and screenwriter Cecilia Bartolomé is one of the most transgressive women filmmakers of her time. She graduated from Spain’s Official Film School in 1969, but not until after the death of Franco and the return to democracy was she able to make this feature film.

The screening on 25 Mar 2023 will be followed by a discussion with core members of the AHRC-funded research project Leading Women in Portuguese and Spanish Cinema and Television,1970-1980.

Delve deeper into Cecilia Bartolomé’s back catalogue with the screening of her Film School work on Sun 26 Mar.
