Tricky Women/Tricky Realities Showcase

Directed by Niki Lindroth von Bahr, Nari Jang, Martina Tritthart, Marta Pajek, Renata Gasiorowska, Martina Scarpelli, Moïa Jobin-Paré & Marie-Christine Courtès

Tricky Women/Tricky Realities is the first and only festival of animated film that is dedicated exclusively to animation by women* filmmakers. It takes place every year in March around the date of the International Women’s Day. We welcome Festival directress Waltraud Grausgruber to the festival as she presents some of her favourite films from the last few years.

Films screening in this programme are:

The Burden (Dir Niki Lindroth von Bahr/SE 2017/14 mins)
A dark musical enacted in a modern marketplace, situated next to a large freeway. The employees of the various commercial venues deal with boredom and existential anxiety by performing cheerful musical tunes. The apocalypse is a tempting liberator.

My Father’s Room (Dir Nari Jang/KR 2016/8 mins)
She was abused by her father during childhood. Since he left, the pain and anger have begun to fade. One day, unexpectedly, she is struck by a revelation about her father’s life that casts her feelings about him into confusion.

Solar mechanix 1.1 (Dir Martina Tritthart/AT 2018/4 mins)

An interplay of light and colour. Light phenomena turn into sensual geometric objects that interact with the soundtrack.

Sleepincord (Dir Marta Pajek/PL 2011/14 mins)
Dreams take us to a world where rules are variable; when we wake up we enter a world which we sometimes can fully control, while occasionally “something” controls us and makes a decision for us.

Pussy (Dir Renata Gasiorowska/PL 2016/8 mins)
A young girl spends the evening alone at home. She decides to have a sweet solo pleasure session, but not everything goes according to plan.

Egg (Dir Martina Scarpelli/FR 2018/12 mins)

A woman is locked in her home with an egg, which she is both attracted to and scared of. She eats the egg, she repents. She kills it. She lets the egg die of hunger.

4min15 in the Developer (Dir Moïa Jobin-Paré/CA 2015/5 mins)
A young woman and an urban landscape interact with each other. Developing images and intricacies by scratching and sewing them on again. A film in mixed techniques.

Under your Fingers (Dir Marie-Christine Courtès/FR 2014/13 mins)
When her grandmother dies, a young girl relives the story of the women of her family, from the colonial Indochine to the isolation in a transit camp.
