Topsy-Turvy

Directed by Mike Leigh

In the entertaining new offering from Mike Leigh, composer Arthur Sullivan accuses his writer-partner William Gilbert of creating bits of ‘topsy-turvy’ that have no real significance. Through an engaging tale of backstage shenanigans and creative differences, Leigh traces the process of putting on a show – from egocentric actors to bizarre sources of inspiration, and all the teamwork and battles involved. The result is The Mikado (large chunks of the play are energetically staged). Familiar faces from previous Leigh films mingle with newcomers in a glorious ensemble. Will TOPSY-TURVY finally bring Mike Leigh the Oscar he was denied?
