Time Bascule

Directed by Di Mainstone

A message in a bottle found on the shoreline of the River Thames leads thirteen-year-old Rose to Tower Bridge, where she discovers that the landmark’s intricate ‘bascule’ mechanism holds the secret to the delicate balance of our ecosystems.

Tower Bridge commissioned artist Di Mainstone to ‘make the bridge sing’ in celebration of the landmark’s 125th anniversary. Time Bascule reimagines Tower Bridge as a giant musical instrument, drawing inspiration from one of the first women to work on the Bridge – Hannah Griggs, who cooked for the Bridge Master and his family between 1911-1915.

Hannah adopts the role of musical maestro, who plucks the strings and plays the iconic London landmark. The film mixes real elements of Hannah’s life with fantastical imaginings and musical narratives all revolving around the Bridge.

Time Bascule has won awards at international film festivals in Montreal, LA, Sao Paulo, and Athens.
