Thumbsucker

Directed by Mike Mills

Being compared by many to Donnie Darko, the feature début of acclaimed music video director Mills is a deadpan comedy delight, a very human tale of suburban angst. Justin still sucks his thumb at 17; it relieves the pressures of teen life and weird parents. But society can’t tolerate his habit and so increasing measures are taken to cure him. A cracking, quotable script, brilliant performances and a fab soundtrack (The Polyphonic Spree, Elliot Smith) make this the indie discovery of the year.
