When fashion model Valentine accidentally runs over a dog, she takes him to a vet, gets him patched up, and then tries to return him to his owner. Valentine learns that the dog’s owner, Joseph Kern, is a retired judge who lives alone and listens in on his neighbours’ telephone conversations. The pair slowly become friends; meanwhile, nearby, a relationship between two of Joseph’s neighbours breaks down. Valentine repeatedly crosses paths, but never meets, the heart-broken young man – unaware that he will soon have an important impact on her life.
