The World

Directed by Jia Zhangke

A rare opportunity to see this film, specially imported for this season.

Director Jia Zhangke’s first officially sanctioned film is also his most cinematically opulent. Tao (Jia regular Zhao Tao) triumphantly announces that she is going to India, but the exotic location of her dreams is in fact the dreary, hermetic Beijing World Park, a themed suburban expanse offering replicas of 100 tourist locations from 5 continents. But it’s a window on a world that remains completely beyond reach. The world is a stinging indictment on globalisation and its effects on rapidly changing Chinese culture.
