The Testament of Dr. Mabuse

Directed by Fritz Lang

The third instalment in Lang’s saga of master criminal Dr Mabuse finds the characterisation of the villain slightly altered – but enough to get the film banned by Goebbels. In the earlier DR MABUSE THE GAMBLER, the evil doctor represents the corruption of Weimar Germany, equally lording it over casinos and stock exchange. In TESTAMENT, he’s depicted mouthing Nazi slogans and mesmerising the population. Yet Lang was offered a role in the New Order. Instead he decamped to the States.
