Spielberg’s first feature for cinema, SUGARLAND EXPRESS features a beautifully choreographed car chase across American highways involving a fugitive couple, various and ever-increasing officers of the law, plus newsman, well-wishers, and rednecks. Based on a true story, it tracks Lou Jean (Hawn) as she encourages her husband to escape from jail so that they can retrieve their baby from its foster home in Sugarland. To get there they abduct a highway patrolman and his car, and that’s when the trouble starts.
