Inspired by the work of legendary Indian director Ritwik Ghatak (pictured), Anup Singh’s documentary styled drama that uses a love story between a man and a woman crossing the river between Bangladesh and India to explore a range of issues thrown up by the Partition of India. The BFI has described The Name of the River as an ‘exquisite film’ that ‘presents its audience with a dreamlike odyssey through a history, a life and a work that we, the viewers, encounter in the shape of stunning landscapes and music, lovers and gods, myths and memories, literature and cinema.’

We will be joined by director Anup Singh for a post-screening Q&A, chaired by Omar Ahmed, PhD student at the University of Manchester and curator of our upcoming season Not Just Bollywood.
