The Mystic Masseur

Directed by Ismail Merchant

In this first film version of a work by Nobel-prize winner VS Naipaul, Mandvi is the idealistic Trinidadian Indian teacher of the title who sets out to be a writer but instead finds himself praised as a spiritual healer and headed for the political arena. A keen sense of place and a fine-tuning to the airs, eccentricities and aspirations of its well-drawn characters make this an enjoyable and atmospheric adaptation. ***+ Shooting schedule on LE DIVORCE permitting Ismail Merchant will introduce the screening.***
