The Lives of Others

Directed by Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck

The 2007 Foreign Language Film Oscar is not the first prize that this gripping thriller has captured for its tale of a Stasi operative transformed by his latest assignment. The directorial debut follows the Stasi at their omniscient toil, specifically Capt. Gerd Wiesler (Mühe) who’s investigating an apparently loyal playwright (Koch) and his girlfriend (Gedeck). Weisler discovering nothing to pin on them, finds himself becoming fascinated by the lives he’d despised. But his new found interest is soon put to the test.
