The Lady and the Duke

Directed by Eric Rohmer

Rohmer’s inventive historical drama is inspired by the memoirs of a Scotswoman living in France during the revolution. Grace Elliott (Russell) is an English woman living in Paris and the lover of the progressive Duke of Orleans. From this dangerously lofty position she witnesses a bit too closely the events and effects of the revolution. A lover of history, the director was determined to evoke an accurate period Paris, achieved through the use of the latest digital technologies to merge the actors into the film’s ‘painted’ settings. A luminous and fascinating glimpse of one of the most tumultuous periods in history.
