The second part of the Golden Heart trilogy, THE IDIOTS (Dogme 2) is arguably von Trier’s most provocative film, his only feature to be shot completely according to the pared-down, no-tricks Dogme tenets. A group of young people act like idiots in public in order to provoke reactions from witnesses. When a young woman joins the group in their communal house, the dynamic becomes unbalanced and the shockingly comic tone turns darker. THE IDIOTS is a highly disturbing, in-your-face, challenge to audience perceptions.
