The House of Mirth

Directed by Terence Davies

Davies, the Liverpool-born writer/director of DISTANT VOICES, STILL LIVES turns his attention to turn of the century New York for this tragic love story, adapted from Edith Wharton’s novel. X-Files star Anderson gives a superb performance as Lily Bart, a beautiful and intelligent socialite, much in favour with the glittering elite. Lily follows the unspoken rules of behaviour laid down for single women, including the age-old decree to seek a suitable husband, and deny her chance for true love with Lawrence (Stoltz). But the cruel machinations underlying the gilded façade of society catch Lily unaware, and the rules she has lived by are used to destroy her. As in all of Davies’ previous films, camera, lighting, design and sound are blended to evoke perfectly an enveloping, sumptuous sense of place and time.We are pleased to welcome director Terence Davies to discuss his film following the 7.30pm screening on Thu 2 November.
