Sparingly plotted, but rich in humour, surrealism and satirical bite, The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie is arguably the most accomplished film from Luis Buñuel, a master of politically charged cinema.
It follows a group of upper-class friends who make repeated attempts to dine together, but continually have their plans thwarted by bizarre interruptions and surreal events, including a series of seemingly interlocking dreams.
The film plays with classic Buñuel themes: class, consciousness, desire, patriarchy and the Church. A cast of arthouse stalwarts, including Fernando Rey, Michel Piccoli and Delphine Seyrig, are impeccable in this gem of surrealist cinema.
Restored in 4K for its 50th anniversary.
