The Devil is a Woman

In the star’s final film with director Sternberg, Dietrich plays Concha, a Spanish cigarette factory girl who is the object of desire of two men ­ a young revolutionary and an older soldier ­ who masochistically submit themselves to her rejections. Buñuel’s THAT OBSCURE OBJECT OF DESIRE was later adapted from the same source novel by Pierre Louys. As always, the Dietrich glamour shimmers with monochromatic magnificence.
