The Company

Directed by Robert Altman

Former ballet student Campbell co-wrote and co-produced this quasi-doc on life in a ballet corps, in this case the Joffrey Ballet. Featuring actual company dancers interspersed with actors, it eavesdrops (as do all Altman films) on a closed community. Witness how the corps dancer becomes the prima ballerina following an accident. How her busy life hampers her affair with a busy chef. How the company director (McDowell) despotically ‘motivates’ his troupe. And of course there are the dance scenes, choreographed by Lar Lubovitch and Robert Desrosiers, with flashes of amazing imagery.
