Affectionately also known as ‘The Drapes of Roth’ (due to an amazing plot device that involves a set of curtains), this is one of Minnelli’s finest melodramas. Set in an upscale psychiatric clinic, the film records the squabbling between staff, director, patients, and overly interested others, like the director’s wife. And then there are the romantic intrigues that ensue. Gloriously Freudian, it features Minnelli’s consummate artistry and excellent performances from some of Hollywood’s finest. Plus those curtains…
