Ten Canoes

Directed by Rolf de Heer & Peter Djigirr

The first feature to be made in the Ganalbingu language is a visually stunning, and often funny passage into traditional Aboriginal culture. Co-written and narrated by veteran actor David Gulpilil (WALKABOUT), it offers an ancient tale of ten men preparing their canoes for the annual hunt. The elder, Minygulu, discovers that young Dayindi (Gulpilil’s son Jamie) has designs on his third wife. To restore village order, the old man offers the group a ‘morality tale’ about a similar situation involving their ancestors many generations before.
