Tales From the Gimli Hospital

Directed by Guy Maddin

In the 19th century rural Canadian settlement Gimli an epidemic lands young fisherman Einar in hospital. There he befriends Gunnar and the two compete with each at storytelling. Einar carves bark fishes and wishes he had his friend’s narrative talents. Sinister, surreal and darkly comic, TALES was Maddin’s début feature and established his reputation as an edgy filmmaker with a dark sense of humour, a camp love of melodrama, and a style steeped in silent cinema.
