Suzhou River

Directed by Lou Ye

A swirling narrative of doubling romance and identity, SUZHOU RIVER is the second film from this young Chinese director. This stylishly inventive film chronicles and is the chronicle of a videographer in love with a mermaid costumed nightclub performer. He becomes fascinated by small time crook Mardar who’s charged with ferrying around a rich business man’s daughter whom he inevitably falls for. With its heady mixture of subjective, edgy camera work, jagged editing and a quircky voiceover. SUZHOU RIVER represents the exciting stream of sixth generation Chinese filmmaking.
