Szabó’s epic is a deeply moving account of three generations of one Jewish family, set against the sweeping background of the upheavals of the 20th century. The first representative of the Sonnenschein family is Ignatz, a powerful judge in the Austo-Hungarian empire. Ignatz’s son Adam is an Olympic athlete who learns that his sporting status is meaningless against the anti-Semitic policies of the Nazi invaders. Finally, Adam’s son Ivan experiences the postwar Communist legacy.
