Steve McQueen: The Man and Le Mans

Directed by Gabriel Clarke & John McKenna

“When you’re racing, it’s life. Anything that happens before or after is just waiting”

This documentary follows McQueen’s quest to make a movie in the early 1970s about the 24-hour race in France, Le Mans. Over a six-month period, McQueen’s director John Sturges quit, his marriage fell apart, and his company was on the brink of bankruptcy; and all the while he was in constant fear for his life after learning that he was on the top of Charles Manson’s ‘death list’. A story of obsession, betrayal and ultimate vindication, it’s an insight into how one of the most volatile, charismatic stars of his generation, who seemingly lost so much he held dear in the pursuit of his dream, nevertheless followed it to the end.
