SPARE PARTS is a timely drama of illegal immigrants, unusually told from the viewpoint of the smuggler rather than the smuggled. Ludvik is a former race driver and a recent widower who earns his lucrative crust by smuggling illegal immigrants and asylum seekers into Italy. Business is brisk and so he takes on an apprentice. Shocked at first, Rudi soon learns the trade. Mixing character-studies of the human traffickers with the gripping individual dramas of their clients, Kozole’s film plays like a story ripped from tomorrow’s headlines – a tale of limited options, and of the desperate economic conditions that, ultimately, blur the lines dividing exploiter and exploited.
