Solas

Directed by Benito Zambrano

The winner of the Panorama Audience Prize at the 1999 Berlin Film Festival, ALONE is an amazingly accomplished feature début from Sevillano director Zambrano. Anchored by powerful performances from its central trio, the film has been scooping acting awards from across the globe. A thirty-something woman is leading a bitter, lonely life of poverty in an Andalucian city. Suddenly her past returns in the form of the mother she’d left behind in their village. The older woman has come to stay in her daughter’s derelict apartment whilst her husband is having surgery in a nearby hospital. Thrown together for a brief period of time, their relationship is severely tested, but with the aid of an elderly upstairs neighbour the pair reach a deeper understanding. SOLAS is an open and emotionally resonant exploration of relationships that will leave no one untouched.
