The director of ELECTION and ABOUT SCHMIDT returns with another caustically etched comedy, centred upon indelible characters. AMERICAN SPLENDOR’s Giamatti co-stars as 40-something Miles, a divorced, depressed secondary school teacher and almost-author with a penchant for fine wines. When his high-school buddy and polar opposite Jack (Church), a waning, self-absorbed TV actor, announces impending marriage, Miles invites him for a final week-long fling – on a Southern California vineyard tour. Whilst Miles dreams of finding the perfect Pinot Noir, Jack aspires to finding something a little more human (and female) –and sampling all the varieties. Sparkling dialogue and brilliant performances make this bittersweet, odd couple road movie a true delight.
