Shower

Directed by Zhang Yang

Winner of numerous festival audience awards, SHOWER is a warm comedy with a cautionary undercurrent. Da Ming is a successful, modern young businessman who reluctantly returns to Beijing to see his dying father. But Master Liu is well, ruling over his traditional neighbourhood bathhouse with the aid of his mentally disabled son. There, a motley group of male characters congregate for socialising, singing and cricket fights whilst Master Liu doles out tea, advice and massages. At first Da Ping can’t wait to escape, but soon he is drawn into the life and learns to care for the brother he’s denied for so many years. But Master Liu is old, the neighbourhood decrepit, and property values are rising. SHOWER is a poignant and comic depiction of the inevitability of change, the clash between traditional and modern, and the relentless erosion of a sense of community in modern urban life.
