This screening of By Hook or By Crook features as part of the University of Manchester’s annual Sexuality Summer School (22 – 26 May 2017). The Sexuality Summer school is a week of seminars and public events addressing key feminist and queer debates in the field of sexuality studies. This year focusses on the theme ‘Why Be Normal?’, considering norms, normativities and the history of the normal. The showing will be followed by a roundtable event, giving audience members the opportunity to discuss the film in relation to the Summer School theme.
By Hook or By Crook tells the tale of a quirky friendship that ensues when handsome young Shy (Silas Howard) chances upon Valentine (Harry Dodge) and he finds a kindred spirit and a partner in crime. The film offers a punky queer twist on the buddy movie genre.
This screening will be introduced by Professor Jackie Stacey (University of Manchester), and followed by a roundtable discussion with Dr Monica Pearl and Sophie Mayer (freelance writer and film/media activist).
