Carla (Devos) is a hearing impaired, average-looking secretary who is dedicated to her job and extremely good at it. But her employers never appreciate her worth, especially her talent for lip-reading. Then she arranges for Paul (Cassel), a young, hunky yet clueless trainee to join the firm. This ex-thief brings a different kind of work experience and, as the film’s slogan says, she teaches him good manners and he teaches her bad ones. A stylish and enjoyable neo-noir, READ MY LIPS is ‘intelligent, absorbing and resonant European genre cinema’ (Sight & Sound).
