Punch-Drunk Love

Directed by Paul Thomas Anderson

Reportedly made by its director as a retort to charges of verbosity aimed at his previous epics, BOOGIE NIGHTS (screening on 10 August) and MAGNOLIA, PUNCH-DRUNK LOVE is a more intimate tale of the growing romance between a social misfit and a confident businesswoman. Exploring its stars’ personas to the fullest (especially Sandler’s), the film is an engaging and at times disturbing deconstruction of the romantic comedy and is arguably the overlooked film of the year.
