Based upon a graphic novel by Bastien Vivès, Polina is a cinematic pas de deux between choreographer Angelin Preljocaj and director Valérie Müller. It recounts the fall from grace of a promising ballet dancer who turns her back on the prestigious Bolchoï when she discovers contemporary dance, following her love interest Adrien (Niels Schneider) to France to work for famous choreographer Liria Elsaj (Binoche).
