Mexican cinema has made headlines recently with ‘crossover’ hits such as AMORES PERROS and Y TU MAMÁ TAMBIEN. But the majority of Mexican films are made on a smaller budget, often grittily depicting contemporary issues. Based on a true story, PERFUME DE VIOLETAS follows rebellious tomboy Yessica as she causes problems both at school and at home. Then her spoilt new step-brother decides to teach her a lesson by hiring a workmate to rape the girl. Terrified and ashamed, she turns to her friend Miriam for support, and their friendship sustains them against a brutal world. PERFUME was nominated for the Foreign Language Oscar in 2002.
