Out of Sight

Directed by Steven Soderbergh

Having already established herself as an actress, Jennifer Lopez stars in arguably her most accomplished role as Karen Sisco, a US marshal who is forced to share a confined space with the Jack Foley (George Clooney), the most successful bank robber in the US during Foley’s escape from a Florida prison. After he completes his getaway, Sisco chases Foley while he and his friends – his right-hand man, Buddy (Ving Rhames) and Glenn (Steve Zahn) – work their way north to Bloomfield Hills, a wealthy northern suburb of Detroit where they plan another robbery. Based on an Elmore Leonard novel, Soderbergh’s direction relishes Leonard’s deep comic ease; the characters amble through scenes existing primarily to savour the dialogue. Lopez and Clooney are at their career best.
