The passionate, independent-minded Nora had moved from her Galway home to Dublin where she met Joyce on the streets. They left behind the constraints of Irish life, moving to Trieste, but as Joyce’s career developed, his relationship with Nora suffered for her lack of intellectual understanding of his work.
