In 2008 the MuVi Award for the best German music video celebrated its tenth anniversary. The music video, in its early years often a classic contract production, has long since become its own artistic genre, cutting its ties with music television. Sixteen titles from the last two competitions attest to an autonomous delight in experimentation and an astute sense of humour. The music video still offers a playing field for a diverse range of visual techniques, with filmmakers shrewdly availing themselves of the pertinent pop-cultural myths and then melding imagery and music to create a universe of extraordinary atmospheric density. Inspiration comes from the rich terrain of electronic music – from sound collage to minimal to remix – but also from independent pop, the authors’ own compositions, or that very special cover version of a pop classic.
